Sounds to me like you have got no pressure in the system - could be a faulty pressure switch, the relays dont fail and only makes the electronic clutch work on the compressor, a faulty electromagnetic clutch (have had these fail on Astras) you could force the clutch on the compressor to work by shorting the relay contacts and see if it goes click if it does not thats the problem, if it does and the pipes in front (spare wheel bay) get hot / cold if they do the compressor is good, if nothing happens you may have a leak, the condensor (front radiator) do basically fall to bits, or worst case the compressor is duff, quick way to se if you have gas is to push the low refill valve in with a screwdriver if it squirts gas out with force the system is proberbly charged but dont let too much out as the FGAS regulations make it illegal to release into the air! The controler is behind the evaporator coil inside the car behind the glove box right where the floor carpet goes up and the condensate drain pipe, these I have never had fail, mainly condensor and pressure switch.
