Toyota MR2 MK2 N/A - Please help me!!!!!! Engine stalling really frequently in 1st/2nd gear
submitted by Jo Martin on 26/09/2010
Hi, I have a MK 2 MR2 T bar(S reg, anniversary edition) which I have just spend tons on getting a new clutch, aerial, roof seals etc (I'd reach the 'sell it' or 'keep it 'til it dies' point and decided I just couldn't bear to part with it). This remaining problem is making me wish I'd sold!! I thought it might be related to the clutch but I was wrong. Gutted. :-( The is intermittent which makes me think it's electrical, but it seems to be getting steadily worse. Symptoms: - I'm sure the battery used to charge to full, with the needle sitting hard up at the top of the gauge. Now it is always about 4/5 charged and dips visibly if I use an electric window. Bought new battery. No difference. - If it stalls, which it does alot, it labours to start again (3-4 seconds of prevaricating after I turn the key?). If it doesn't start first time in the morning, the second attempt can be dodgy too. It seems to be worstening with the bad weather. - The battery seems to go flat quite easily. This isn't a major symptom as I never ever intentionally sit with the engine off and the radio/fans/lights on any more, but if I do by accident, it goes flat really fast. - The engine has a really wobbly idle. At around 1000/2000rpm it sometimes jumps around alot. Earlier today, just driving in second gear at 15mph, in a queue, foot on accelerator, the whole car bunny-hopped, jolting violently every couple of seconds. It's done this before when if it's having a bad day. - When I am driving in first or second gear, I can actually feel the engine threatening to stall. I can tell if I'm going to have a bad day within a minute of having the engine on. It feels a bit 'weak' under my feet. Wobbly? Unstable? Subtle but I am used to it so notice it very fast now. Particularly if changing down through the gears. Worst is if I am approaching a junction or joining a queue of traffic and changing down. If I am slowing the car down and go near the clutch in a low gear to bring the car in to a halt, that's gonna stall on me. I end up revving the car in frustration. Each junction can be a test. I am more and more using engine breaking and trying to keep the revs high. I am actually getting scared of driving the car and starting to question my driving ability it stall so often. It's destroying my confidence and I am normally a very confident, assertive driver. - It can be particularly bad if I've been doing 65mph on the motorway and then come off a sliproad and have to stop at a roundabout. I never drive faster than 65mph to try not to exacerbate this. - I am constantly battling with it not to stall. A 20 minute drive to work can include re-starting the car 6 or 7 times. How completely embarrassing. - Toyota diagnostic test showed a big fat zero. PLEASE if anyone knows what this could be, could they give me some advice? I am so miserable about it. I love my car and know it's getting rarer as a limted edition but 'we buy any car. com' is starting to beckon. Many thanks for any suggestions you have.

Toyota MR2 Other - Malfunction Indicator Lamp
submitted by Amanda Bartlett on 28/04/2010
Ive got a 2000 MR2 roadster and the malfunction indicator lamp is on Ive taken it to a garage and they said the machine is reading that 2 of the cylinders are running lean but they cant find anything wrong with it. They say there is nothing else they can do without it costing me a fortune and even then it might not be fixed. I had the same problem with another one i bought but luckily it was under warranty and the garage concerned spent 3000 trying to fix it and even they couldnt find what the problem was so had to replace it with the one i have now. Im worried that im going to spend loads of money and it still not be fixed but also worried that if i just keep driving it with the light on i could damage the car or cause an accident. HELP!!! Has anyone else had this problem and what was the outcome??! Im getting desperate.

Toyota MR2 MK2 Turbo - Theft Deterant Electronic Control Unit (TD ECU)
submitted by Darin Gilman on 19/03/2010
My 1991 Turbo MR2 has lost control of electic windows, mirrors and locking systems. The starter cut-off engages and the alarm system goes off when I unlock the door after manually locking the doors. I am attempting to test the TD ECU, but i can't seem to find the TD ECU. According to the diagram in the shop manuals it appears to be in the engine compartment, but as of yet I can't seem to find it. Does anyone know where the TD ECU is located?

Toyota MR2 MK1 N/A - Dashboard Lights do not work.

Ok my dashboard lights do not come on. When I turn on my headlights the blinker lights on the dash just glow. I've been chasing the problem since I got the car and every now and then the dashboard lights pop on. I'm thinking it has to do with the rheostat but I have a spare and put it on but the lights still wont come on. I've tried everything. Anyone else have this problem?

Toyota MR2 MK2 N/A - No Power!
submitted by Dave on 29/12/2009
After changing valve stem guides the car started no problem. Started 2nd time but 3rd time we started it the engine wouldn't turn over and smoke appeared from starter motor area and battery area. Turned ignition key off but ignition lights stayed on very dimly. Pulled earth strap off from battery. Didn't blow 40A fuse. Someone told us it could be starter motor or relay so have replaced both. When you turn ignition to on position all dash lights come up everything works on car (lights, horn etc), but as soon as turn to start position lights go off on dash and nothing happens to starter motor just hear relay clicking. When you turn ignitino key off the ignition light stays on dimly so have to pull earth strap off battery. Reconnect earth strap, turn to on positoin everything lights up again. No fuses have blown. Have checked a lot of wiring and can't find any shorts. Could this be an earth or fuseable link problem? Or ignition switch problem?

Toyota MR2 MK2 N/A - 1986 Toyota MR2 - Not Starting
submitted by Paul Silva on 30/11/2009
The Check Engine light popped on and the car just died. I waited for about 30 minutes and it started right up and got me home. The next few days it wouldn't start so I checked fuses, relays and wire connections. Everything seemed fine. Just for kicks I disconnected the battery, pulled all fuses and relays to make sure none of them had corrosion. After reinstallation of everything it fired right up. I drove it maybe a mile and it died again and wouldn't start again. I started with the basics, checked fuel system and fuel pressure which was fine. Checked for spark from the coil and nothing. So I have since went throught the steps per Haynes Repair Manual 92065, the igniter, coil, distributor and wiring check out fine and are within tolerances noted in the Haynes Repair Manual. My next thought is to replace the main ECU Part No. 89661-17050. Is there anything else I am missing or overlooking? The car turns over perfectly it just won't fire. The car has no mods and is basically stock, automatic transmission, approximately 128,000 miles, and is not supercharged.

I am having difficulties with the central locking on drivers side door. When using the key it will lock and unlock both driver and passenger door however, when using the remote control or the door lock switch within the car only the passenger side unlocks/locks. I can feel the solenoid activating but not operating arms. I have taken the mechanism off and it seems to be in tact could there possibly be a problem with the cog or connection within the solenoid?

Toyota MR2 MK2 N/A - Backfiring, rpm fluctuation when cold
submitted by Michelle on 26/05/2008
I have a 1991 MR2. I've changed the idle speed motor, distributor cap, wires, spark plugs, and had an injector flush because the car's rpms where going up and down randomly whether I was idling or driving, and it would periodically just die on me. After replacing the above mentioned things at the dealership hoping that would solve the problem, it is doing the exact same thing: the engine light still comes on and off as the rpms rev up and down until it warms up, and now I have the bonus feature that it backfires too if I give it gas while it's warming up, which it wasn't doing before. Any help is appreciated!!

Toyota MR2 MK1 N/A - Electrical
submitted by John Thrash III on 12/05/2005
I have a porblem with my 87 MR2 mk1's headlights. When the lights are hooked up they cause a buzing sound at the headlight relay switch. The head lights dont come on at all nor do the tail lights. The dumb**s I bought the car from cut the wire to the ashtray light for is stupid shifter knob light. The voltage there increases to i think it was about from 1 to 5 volts when the light switch is turned on. There is definately something wrong with the whole wire that runs the lights between all that and the switch. I just dont know what the buzzing at the relay switch means and I dont know if the headlights voltage should be more that 10 volts which is what the connecter to the light is putting out when the lights are no even lighting up. Anyone have any knowledge about this it would e helpful ... I am about to go get a manual or order one online soon cuz I neeeeeeeed the electrical specifications. Also I just did a large amout of body work on my MR2 if anyone needs knowledge on that email me.... Thrashed3@yahoo.com

Toyota MR2 MK2 N/A - MR2 MK2 won't start
submitted by Tony on 26/08/2004
for a while when it started up it was spluttering and would then that would clear after it had been driven for a while. then it conked out completely. It would try to start but to no avail. the AA guy thought it might be the coil or the ignitor. I changed the coil- made no difference - could not get the same ignitor but tested one very similar and got very similar resistance readings. Paid a guy to look and he said it was the rotary arm - changed that - still no joy - the earthing is ok - there is fuel getting to the plugs - if the coil and the ignitor are ok - all fuses and relays seem ok. What on earth else could be wrong. Any Ideas???? he also said it could be the ecu - but how do I check that.... desperately need help

Toyota MR2 MK2 Turbo - Can't get full turbo boost - error code 42
submitted by Iain Bradshaw on 11/08/2004
1994 Turbo The car runs fine when cold, however when the engine temperature reaches normal running level and the engine revs exceed 2500 a dash warning light comes on and stays on. If the ignition is turned off the light goes out, but comes back on again when 2500 revs are exceeded. At this stage full turbo boost is not available. It appears the diagnostic error code is number 42 which relates to the speed sensor. I have changed the speed sensor on the gearbox, the driveshaft on the speed sensor and the speedometer, but the fault persists. Can anyone shed any light on the problem or give any guidance?

Toyota MR2 MK2 N/A - EFI Fuse blows
submitted by Nick Edwards on 05/07/2004
Last Sunday my car died for no apparent reason, and I eventualy traced it to a blown EFI fuse. This seemed like a one-off until yesterday when the fuse blew twice more and now blows immediately the ignition is turned on. Looking at the circuit diagram, my best guess is that the fuel pump has given notice and now failed. Anyone have any experience of this? changing a fuel pump looks like a major job, fuel tank out etc, and I don't really want to go down this road if it isn't the problem.

Toyota MR2 MK3 - Engine Transplant

I put a new uk engine ein my imported mr2 year 2000. Call me ignorant but i thought that would be the end of my engine trouble. When i try to give the car full throttle it doesnt quite like it it picks a rev and stays there for anything up to 3+ seconds think i have counted up to 20 so far. I checked the air induction circuit and i checked the injectors and put in a injector cleaner. Even though the car seems to be preforming slightly better the engine light still persists to come on normally in fourth gear on a slight gradient. Somebody help me please!!!

Toyota MR2 Other - MR-2 Ignition Problem ("missing")
submitted by Chris on 10/06/2004
I bought this '86 MR-2 (automatic transmission) about 8 months ago and these problems have developed gradually. First is an intermittent "missing" that occurs anytime (during idle or while driving) but happens mostly either when first started ("cold") or after it's been driven for over an hour ("hot") but rarely inbetween ("warm"). I've done the usual replace plugs, cap, rotor, plus a can of fuel injector cleaner. (Plug wires are fine - I sprayed them with the hose and there were no worse problems while starting or running.) I'm told there are no "points" to replace, but with other older vehicles these symptoms feel EXACTLY like bad points!? Also, when hot, the tachometer needle is regularly jumping up about another 1000 rpm and falling back but with no increase in engine speed (about every tenth occurance of this the engine does its "missing" routine, and afterwards the tach drops a bit to reflect the lower engine rpm while it's recovering) and I can't help but feel there's a connection. (Again, with other vehicles, ignition points that have worn to where the gap has dropped to zero have caused not only the "missing" but have also caused electrical bursts of noise that, among other things, result in the same kind of spurious tach readings? (But again, I'm assured this simply cannot be the case here.) Second, should I also mention that when hot, the engine begins knocking when going uphill (is it easy to set the timing?) and third, it's begun to leak oil onto the exhaust manifold... (valve cover gasket?)(*sigh*) I thought Toyota's were top of the line midrange cars!?!?!? Does anyone have any practical advice (other than "sell it, quick!?)

hi there i would appreciate feedback on a problem i am having with my sw20 temperature gauge- the car is idling slightly high(1200-1500rpm) and also the guage suggests that its taking forever for the engine to warm up to normal operating temperature even after driving for an extended period the guage reads only a quarter - when the car sits idle in traffic the guages raises -and when car was on race track recently guage readings were fine -- i am wondering if a faulty sensor may be sending incorrect data to ecu -- would love to hear from anyone who has solved such a problem

Also my auto box drops its high gear/overdrive mid journey. Switching the OD switch doensnt make it come back. Turning engine off and back on clears it for a while. Previous owner suggested its a poor electrical connection somewhere. anyone seen this? If its related, my yellow engine check light appears sometimes but not necessarily when OD dissapears. The next day I have no volts to MAP, Throttle position sensor or VC terminal on ECU and NO ENGINE RUNNING aat all. No turbo gauge reading Can any one help please. Thank you

Toyota MR2 MK2 Turbo - blown diodes?
submitted by colourblind in s/wales on 29/12/2003
I have a '92 jap import with approx 70k miles. Having been parked up for a couple of months the battery went flat. I accidentally connected the jump leads the wrong way around (reversed current) which was brought to my attention by a smoking battery. After re-connecting the jump leads the correct way around the engine started. Unfortunately I no longer have any power steering, electric windows, interior heater/fan, dash lights or gauge readings (including speedo and fuel). the lights, indicators and wipers work fine and the radiator fan remains on constantly while the ignition is on. I have checked all the fuses and relays located in the boxes under the front bonnet, in the engine bay and in the drivers foot well but found none 'blown'. Are there any fuses or relays that i may have overlooked? I was also wondering if there is some kind of a 'limp home' safety feature on my car which may account for the essential electrics working when everything else fails.

Toyota MR2 MK1 N/A - Headlights will NOT come on... I'm in the dark on this one...
submitted by Michael on 10/08/2003
(no pun intended)... but at first my headlights would shut off right in the middle of driving... I would pull over and play with the switch and they would come back on... and then back off at random... I have replaced: 1. Headlight switch 2. Flasher/Turn light Flasher 3. Headlight Relay 4. And a relay under dash above fuse box Still does it... funny thing... now they won't come on at all... instead I get this loud buzzing sound from a relay under the dash above the fuse box... replaced it and it still does it. Even when my flashers are on and I play around with the DIMMER switch on the headlight switch it makes the flashers not work and creates the loud buzzing sound from the same relay... My parking lights come on, but as soon as I turn on the headlights, they pop up like normal but do not come on... Like I said... I've pretty much replaced everything I can think of ... but obviously not the right thing... Any help would be greatley appreciated...
