| Electrical | | Toyota MR2 MK1 N/A - Mk1 MR2 supercharger: heater an overdrive | | Hi all
My heater is no longer hot! all fan functions etc are still working. I've read about this possibly being water blockage but could it be as easy as a fuse?
Also my auto box drops its high gear/overdrive mid journey. Switching the OD switch doensnt make it come back. Turning engine off and back on clears it for a while. Previous owner suggested its a poor electrical connection somewhere. anyone seen this? If its related, my yellow engine check light appears sometimes but not necessarily when OD dissapears. I belive you can do something to count number of flashing the check light makes to determine fault occording to the ECU?
If anyone can help my email address is jon.glover@roadpilot.com

| Electrical | | Toyota MR2 MK1 N/A - Headlights will NOT come on... I'm in the dark on this one... | | (no pun intended)... but at first my headlights would shut off right in the middle of driving... I would pull over and play with the switch and they would come back on... and then back off at random...
I have replaced:
1. Headlight switch
2. Flasher/Turn light Flasher
3. Headlight Relay
4. And a relay under dash above fuse box
Still does it... funny thing... now they won't come on at all... instead I get this loud buzzing sound from a relay under the dash above the fuse box... replaced it and it still does it.
Even when my flashers are on and I play around with the DIMMER switch on the headlight switch it makes the flashers not work and creates the loud buzzing sound from the same relay...
My parking lights come on, but as soon as I turn on the headlights, they pop up like normal but do not come on...
Like I said... I've pretty much replaced everything I can think of ... but obviously not the right thing...

(Background) At first the engine would not rev above 3000rpm and gearbox had a mind of its own changing up and down irraticaly. I discovered that the 7.5amp fuse for the E.C.U had blown. Replacing the fuse fixed this problem completely.

| Electrical | | Toyota MR2 MK2 N/A - Backfiring, rpm fluctuation when cold | | I have a 1991 MR2. I've changed the idle speed motor, distributor cap, wires, spark plugs, and had an injector flush because the car's rpms where going up and down randomly whether I was idling or driving, and it would periodically just die on me. After replacing the above mentioned things at the dealership hoping that would solve the problem, it is doing the exact same thing: the engine light still comes on and off as the rpms rev up and down until it warms up, and now I have the bonus feature that it backfires too if I give it gas while it's warming up, which it wasn't doing before. Any help is appreciated!! |

| Electrical | | Toyota MR2 MK2 N/A - 1986 Toyota MR2 - Not Starting | | The Check Engine light popped on and the car just died. I waited for about 30 minutes and it started right up and got me home. The next few days it wouldn't start so I checked fuses, relays and wire connections. Everything seemed fine. Just for kicks I disconnected the battery, pulled all fuses and relays to make sure none of them had corrosion. After reinstallation of everything it fired right up. I drove it maybe a mile and it died again and wouldn't start again. I started with the basics, checked fuel system and fuel pressure which was fine. Checked for spark from the coil and nothing. So I have since went throught the steps per Haynes Repair Manual 92065, the igniter, coil, distributor and wiring check out fine and are within tolerances noted in the Haynes Repair Manual. My next thought is to replace the main ECU Part No. 89661-17050. Is there anything else I am missing or overlooking? The car turns over perfectly it just won't fire. The car has no mods and is basically stock, automatic transmission, approximately 128,000 miles, and is not supercharged. |

I changed the coil- made no difference - could not get the same ignitor but tested one very similar and got very similar resistance readings. Paid a guy to look and he said it was the rotary arm - changed that - still no joy - the earthing is ok - there is fuel getting to the plugs - if the coil and the ignitor are ok - all fuses and relays seem ok. What on earth else could be wrong. Any Ideas????
he also said it could be the ecu - but how do I check that.... desperately need help |

After the alarm stopped going off the second time.. I tried to start it again and this time the alarm doesn't sound, however there the engine doesn't crank. Seems like the gas line is cut or something.
Disconnected the battery to reset all the computers and still.. nothing....
I'm not sure if this car has a factory remote to unlock the doors, panic etc... but I didn't get one from the buyer.
Any idea people... I'm really stuck. I'm thinking I have have fried the starter....

| Electrical | | Toyota MR2 MK2 N/A - Alternator ate my alarm!!! help!!! | | I was in a parking lot when I heard a terrible banging sound in my engine, turns out the alarm (if it's the alarm) siren and all the wiring to it came loose and fell into the alternator. The belts ate the wiring and now the voltmeter on the car says 8 volts and dropping whenever I start the car. It usually says about 11 or 12. Plus the battery light is on. After starting the car once, I can't start it again until I charge the battery. A multimeter reads that my battery isn't getting enough electricity to it. What's wrong with my alternator? |

| Electrical | | Toyota MR2 MK2 Turbo - blown diodes? | | I have a '92 jap import with approx 70k miles. Having been parked up for a couple of months the battery went flat. Unfortunately I no longer have any power steering, electric windows, interior heater/fan, dash lights or gauge readings (including speedo and fuel). the lights, indicators and wipers work fine and the radiator fan remains on constantly while the ignition is on. I have checked all the fuses and relays located in the boxes under the front bonnet, in the engine bay and in the drivers foot well but found none 'blown'. Are there any fuses or relays that i may have overlooked? I was also wondering if there is some kind of a 'limp home' safety feature on my car which may account for the essential electrics working when everything else fails. |

| Electrical | | Toyota MR2 MK2 Turbo - Electrical Igntion | | My engine cuts out due to a fuse blowing in the fuse box located in the engine bay. The car just stops at irregular intervals. The temp gauge reads normal and the engine bay fan is running. I can't find any obvious short circuits and certainly can't use the car knowing that it could cut out at any time. I'm desperate for advise. Replacing the fuse will give me a few more miles or minutes. |

| Electrical | | Toyota MR2 MK3 - Engine Transplant | | I put a new uk engine ein my imported mr2 year 2000. Call me ignorant but i thought that would be the end of my engine trouble. When i try to give the car full throttle it doesnt quite like it it picks a rev and stays there for anything up to 3+ seconds think i have counted up to 20 so far. I checked the air induction circuit and i checked the injectors and put in a injector cleaner. Even though the car seems to be preforming slightly better the engine light still persists to come on normally in fourth gear on a slight gradient. Somebody help me please!!! |

| Electrical | | Toyota MR2 Other - MR-2 Ignition Problem ("missing") | | I bought this '86 MR-2 (automatic transmission) about 8 months ago and these problems have developed gradually. First is an intermittent "missing" that occurs anytime (during idle or while driving) but happens mostly either when first started ("cold") or after it's been driven for over an hour ("hot") but rarely inbetween ("warm"). I've done the usual replace plugs, cap, rotor, plus a can of fuel injector cleaner. (Plug wires are fine - I sprayed them with the hose and there were no worse problems while starting or running.) I'm told there are no "points" to replace, but with other older vehicles these symptoms feel EXACTLY like bad points!? Also, when hot, the tachometer needle is regularly jumping up about another 1000 rpm and falling back but with no increase in engine speed (about every tenth occurance of this the engine does its "missing" routine, and afterwards the tach drops a bit to reflect the lower engine rpm while it's recovering) and I can't help but feel there's a connection. (Again, with other vehicles, ignition points that have worn to where the gap has dropped to zero have caused not only the "missing" but have also caused electrical bursts of noise that, among other things, result in the same kind of spurious tach readings? (But again, I'm assured this simply cannot be the case here.) Second, should I also mention that when hot, the engine begins knocking when going uphill (is it easy to set the timing?) and third, it's begun to leak oil onto the exhaust manifold... (valve cover gasket?)(*sigh*) I thought Toyota's were top of the line midrange cars!?!?!? Does anyone have any practical advice (other than "sell it, quick!?) |

| Electrical | | Toyota MR2 Other - Malfunction Indicator Lamp | | Ive got a 2000 MR2 roadster and the malfunction indicator lamp is on Ive taken it to a garage and they said the machine is reading that 2 of the cylinders are running lean but they cant find anything wrong with it. They say there is nothing else they can do without it costing me a fortune and even then it might not be fixed. I had the same problem with another one i bought but luckily it was under warranty and the garage concerned spent £3000 trying to fix it and even they couldnt find what the problem was so had to replace it with the one i have now. Im worried that im going to spend loads of money and it still not be fixed but also worried that if i just keep driving it with the light on i could damage the car or cause an accident. HELP!!! Don't touch anything and go back a little later and it starts right up and runs fine. Changed the coil and igniter but still does the same thing. Replaced cap rotor plugs, no difference. I can always tell it's going to start when i turn the key, the tachometer needle will start to move, but when it does'nt start the needle does'nt move at all. Someone told me it could be the distributor, i'm not sure, why would it work one day and not the next? Any information would be appreciated. |
