| Engine | | Toyota MR2 MK1 N/A - Has my headgasket gone? | | Going along M25, doing steady 80mph, Orange warning light comes on, temp gauge goes off scale. No lack of power,(no cut out either, I've had that before when overheating through no water in system) though funny ticking/knocking coming from under my feet(driver), to the left (RHD car).
Pulled over, checked radiator, empty.
Filled it up, waited in idle until temp gauge back to normal, then set off. 3 miles further on, same thing. Filled up again, but this time noticed all the water pouring out from just under the pedals (sort of front right, parallel with back of front wheel).
Thinking it was a burst hose, called out RAC for tow home. RAC man arrived, filled it up with water and no leak. He put the rad cap back on and out poured the water from the same place. His diagnosis was that, due to a pressure build up, it was coming out of the hose that was retained with a spring clip, because it was the point of 'least resistance'? I thought that was what the rad cap or overflow did? the place of least resistance.
Anyway, he therefore concluded that it was the head-gasket. Would he be correct? Anybody else experienced similar? Please help as I don't really want to have to replace the head-gasket. If I do, how hard or easy is it? Do I need any special tools?

| Engine | | Toyota MR2 MK1 N/A - I have had a graduall loss of power since purchasing the car | | I think it is my headgasket but would like to know from someone with experience. When i bought the car it ran like a champ, balls to the wall plenty of power however after about 100 mi i started loosing a good deal of power when engine reached normal oper temp. but had normal amount of power during cold start and it lasted that way for quite a while i recall one day having a major power prob (after the intial loss) due to lack of coolant luckily i had only driven about a 1/2 mi with this problem then quickly added coolant and the problem ceased though i had not gotten my full power back. that was about three months ago. more recently i have lost more power yet again. i had thought it to be the O2 sensor til two days ago when i replaced it and no results. i have also changed oil within the last 500 mi when i did though there was an extremely low amount less than a quart no creamy residue though. spark plugs are new. i have no steam coming from my exhaust though. i also have a weak idle between 500 and 600 during the summer with the AC on the car didn't have enough power to run at idle speed and i have to rev the car up when accelerating from first to about 2000 rpms i can't not get the car moving from a stop with just the clutch. |

| Engine | | Toyota MR2 MK1 N/A - Cooling system problem, can any one help?? | | Hi! I have what seems to be a serious problem with my car. It started when I noticed that from time to time the revs are hunting when I've travelled home from work (about 8 miles). Then a few days ago, it done it and then droped a load of brown water water from somewhere under the engine. I drove it to a friends to put it on a ramp to find where the water came from. could not see exactly but looks like a metal pipe which runs across the back of the block. Problem then became far worse as water is now coming from the front of the car, around the radiator and judging by the mess, it's beeing forced out. Please help, Thanks! |

Very difficult to locate - almost traced to top of engine block. - Lying under car and viewing upwards, to the left, on front of block (i.e. the face to which the manifold connects...),there appears to be a "threaded stud/bolt, (with an open ended alan key type head), just under the distributor. The leak appears to come from this area, but I cannot locate further, without starting to dismantle... A local garage were unwilling to commit, suggesting head gasket may have gone - I had gasket replaced about a year ago, at considerable expense (there is no loss of power or any symptoms associated with head gasket, so I am a bit wary...).
Could it be this stud/bolt - or have you come accross similir problem? Any help would be appreciated.

| Engine | | Toyota MR2 MK1 N/A - Acceleration Problem | | My problem stars when I am idling in my vehicle (92 MR2, no turbo), when the A/C is on the vehicle loses RPM significantly. I also have the problem that when I do push down on the gas pedal, my accelaration is Bogged down and my engine makes a low deep noise (like not getting full power to engine) and then all of the sudden power will be restored and accelaration will increase (not to the full potential as before this problem started). It happens in every gear (less frequent in the higher gears) and every time I drive it. Please Advise on what could cause this problem? Thank you |

| Engine | | Toyota MR2 MK1 N/A - bought 1986 mr2 doesn't run | | i just bought my first mr2 from a gut i know at work. when it tore up on him he told me there was some "noise" from the motor i thought it may be the timing but whe i pulled the distributor cap off the rotor button turned. then i tried to move spark plug wires around to see if that would get it closer to starting but nothing happend in either direction. my uncle thinks it may have jumped timing. i have yet to check the compression but that is next on my list. when i first turned it over i sounded like maybe it wanted to start one of the cylinders but none of the others were getting fire. plugs are wet. does anyoune have any suggestions about what it may be, if so please e-mail any info will be greatly appreciated thanx D.J. |

It idles (just) at about 400rpm and has a habit of cutting out while sitting at lights and stuff. I've tried a few things that you guys suggested. Bleeding the coolant system, checking the vacuum lines etc. but nothing happening. I started playing about with the sensors and it seems to get a bit better when I "wiggle" the wires on the water temperature sensor. Would this be the kind of thing that could be linked or is it sheer coincidnce?? |
| Engine | | Toyota MR2 MK1 N/A - MR2 MK1 wont idle | | I bought a 1986 mr2 mk1. The car did not run when i purchased it. It would turn over, start but stop immediately. I sealed the tubing from the throttle body to the Air flow sensor. It ran great. Now I am having the same problem (although i am positive I fixed the leak). I replaced the vacuum hoses, but i think some are not in there right places. Would this prevent the engine from running? I also took the throttle body off and cleaned it and replaced the gasket.
I can get the car to run if i play with the gas pedal when starting, when it gets warm it will run.

I replaced the spark plugs and all sparked fine, then did a compression test and discovered only pistons 2 and 3 were creating compression. Could this be a result of the headgasket? 1 and 4 are fine.

Any ideas???

| Engine | | Toyota MR2 MK1 SuperCharged - SUPERCHARGER HT LEADS | | Hi All,
Has anyone had trouble getting supercharger HT leads? A parts dealer told me that ONLY original genuine Toyota leads are available for the supercharger (they are diffrent from NA leads).
The company sold me Blueprint pattern leads which didn't fit. The dealer says that he's done some research and Blueprint have admitted they have made a mistake as none of the supercharger leads they make fit and have recently taken them off their catalogue. Bosch dont do SC leads either. Nology and Magnecor do
Can anyone shed any light as I want to be sure I dont buy expensive Toyota leads when I dont need too.
I've been quoted £63 inc vat. Maybe I should consider magnecors or nology leads if they're gonna be this much?
If anyone can help my email is jon.glover@roadpilot.com

| Engine | | Toyota MR2 MK1 SuperCharged - Supercharger boost slow to engage | | After pressing the accelerator from off boost, the boost engages slowly. For about 2 seconds, the boost stutters from 1-2 psi, then picks up. Boost does reach normal levels once it does pick up.
I suspect something related to the clutch because if I am on boost, lift, and accelerate again, the boost responds quickly. Does not seem like the belt, because that seems to cause lowered boost.
I did check the resistance of the clutch stator as the BGB recommends, and that checked out perfect at 3.7 ohmm.
The system has an HKS pulley and the standard vacuum hose bypass, but has been that way for years. This problem started recently.
Has anybody seen anything like this?

I got 2 flashes which means 'Pressure sensor signal' Problem: Open or short circuit in pressure sensor.
Fault area is either Pressure sensor circuit, Pressure sensor or in ECU. This diagnostic test worked so I assume this error code sequence applies to the supercharger I have.
My question is A) What the hell is the pressure sensor?

| Engine | | Toyota MR2 MK1 SuperCharged - mk1 supercharger: HELP! pulley/belt problem | | Hi all
My aircon pump has seized and snapped the belt that runs the waterpump and supercharger. Problem is the aircon will be too expensive to replace (I dont use it anyway, currently no gas).
Between my garage and I, we've decided to try find a smaller belt that will run the waterpump and supercharger but bypass the aircon. Has anyone done this or know if there is a belt from another vehicle that will do it? Its a 5 v groove belt but will be smaller. Did the 4a-gze or mr2 supercharger ever come with no aircon?
I've had trouble identifing which pulley on the engine is which (seven in total including alternator, crank etc). Does have any diagrams (such as in a Haynes manual) that explains them?
The one that has seized appears to be on the side or just below the supercharger but garage seem confident this is the aircon pulley.
The car has an HKS pulley, I believe this is fitted on the crank or the supercharger?
Any help is much appreciated.

| Engine | | Toyota MR2 MK2 N/A - Intermittent engine cut-out / stalling | | My car is the base 2.0 liter coupe, 1990 G-reg Mk11.
For the last 6 months it has suffered from the engine cutting out, albeit intermittently. Typical scenario is driving a couple of miles from cold, stopping to fill up with petrol, then when come to start the car, the engine fires ok but then dies. After trying 2 or 3 times the car will then start up and be fine for a few days, then does it again. It has also cut out on me whilst driving twice, but will instantly fire up again using the ignition. I've only neede breakdown assistance once, when the problem first started. Had all the basic stuff checked. A main Toyota dealer has had the car twice; cannot find any faults with the wiring circuitry. They did think it was the fuel relay which was replaced. Car ran fine for 2 months, then started playing up again. They now think it is the airflow meter but they aren't 100% sure about this. I'm not going to spend £500 on a brand new part.
I'm looking for a salvage part at the moment and hope this will sort it.
Has anyone had a similar problem or know what it might be? Don't want to spend vast amounts of money and would also be interested in selling it if anyone is interested. Apart from this problem, it is in very good condition for its age. Mileage is 139,000.
Thanks in advance if anyone can help. |

| Engine | | Toyota MR2 MK2 N/A - MR2 MkII running really rough | | Hi,
I've recently bought a 1991 J standard MR2 (no spoiler), and its started to run very roughly. It feels almost like one of the spark plugs is out (which they arent) - ie lack of response, its hunting to the point where it lurches ahead constantly and wont drive smoothly until you get up to about 65mph.
I recently changed the radiator due to a leak, and after bleeding the system noticed it had improved the situation a bit, but for only a few hours, then became rough again. A garage thought it might be an air leak, but wouldn't spend time investigating. Does anyone have any ideas? Could it be air getting into the system perhaps? If so, whats the most likely cause?
Would a diagnostic check from Toyota pin point this - or would I be chucking money away!!
Thanks everyone. |

Went to change my plugs and found the plug well full of oil, garage told me it is the rocker box gasket. So I need a set of gaskets, plugs and new leads for my 1990 M2 Rev1. The leads are original still dated 1990 so I guess it is about time they were changed.
Looking back at the service history it appears the problem was first identified at 67k miles, now 89k, I bought the car at 83k and never had any problem so far with misfires etc.
Does anyone know how hard the job is; also any reccomendations on the type of plugs and leads and where to get them.
I am driving down to Le Mans mid next month so guess I better have it all done by then.

| Engine | | Toyota MR2 MK2 N/A - Knocking Noise | | Hi, I have a problem with my mr2, I hear wierd noises over speed bumps, only on the left side. it is like metal to metal noise, only when i accerate or go over speed bump or any kind of bumpy stuff, like something is hitting metal to metal very load. it isn't the struts which is causing it cause i just replace them. From that cause it mess up my piping system again near the manifold and the cat which i had just replacd from b4, also it had crack my hanger from the exhaust from the left side, which i thought it was the problem but then i replace it and same noise.
1. could it be the engine mount from the left side that is causing it?
2. could the struts have been too stiff that the engine mount was so old that it had been crack?
3. is it safe to make the car stiff on the adjustable struts?

The problem originated when the check engine light came on. The symptoms I get are that the car is increasingly harder to start the first time in the morning or after setting for a period of time. Additionally, the car has begun to spit and sputter when driving and losses power then gains it then losses it again like it’s starving of air or fuel. The car usually idles around 800 RPM but I noticed it’s idling around 1,000 RPM and has gotten progressively worse and is now idling at 2,100 RPM and everywhere in between.
Last night while it was spitting and sputtering the engine actually shut down and I’ve noticed massive heat emanating from it even though the heat gauge reads normal. The engine would not restart until it had sat for a period of time to cool off. Even after I go it restarted I can only drive it a few miles until it spits and stutters then shuts down again. I've replaced the O2 sensor, fuel filter, oil filter and have performed a tune up with new plugs, plug wires, and cap and rotor. I’ve cleaned the air intake and throttle body, as well as, replaced the throttle position sensor with no noticeable changes. The check engine light remains and the car is still running poorly. I’m out of ideas can anyone help me with this?
