Toyota MR2 MK2 N/A - Loss of power when accelerating..
submitted by John Schaeffer on 21/08/2010
Hi guys, my 1993 G Ltd automatic has just started to develop this problem during normal running. When depressing accelerator pedal she picks up...but will then frequently 'miss' and motor loses power for 2-3 seconds before picking up again. Yet she runs smooth and sweetly when idling. This has proved dangerous when overtaking other vehicles, as she is prone to 'die' during overtaking manoeuvre. Injectors? Electrical?
Fix / Recommendation 1 submitted by Chunks on 27/08/2010
Could be a number of things:
1) Fuel blockage (have you changed your fuel filter recently)?
2) It could be dirty injectors, but i'd check yo.... More

Toyota MR2 MK1 N/A - mk1 overheating
submitted by Sean W on 29/04/2010
no leak, that i can find, seems no damage to head gasket that i can find, heres the story car was fine, other then the damage i knew about that needed fixing, ran mint, no leaks no burning nothing it was really hot out one day, decided, hey, il check my a/c see if it works, nope, didnt work, now my car overheats, easily, doesnt seem like coolant is flowing, if i drive really hard i can get heat to come through the heater core to provide heat to me, but if i drive really slow and low rpm, car doesnt seem to cool itself, it seems like coolant flows from time to time, and i have seen the cooling fan running, but obviously my car is not cooling, im just hoping someone out there has delt with this problem, or similar one i had the thermostat replaced in sept for winter bcuz it was sticking open before, im wondering if maybe it is toast again
Fix / Recommendation 1 submitted by Chunks on 21/06/2010

Toyota MR2 Other - Engine Noise
submitted by Nancy Herrmann on 07/01/2010
I have a 2002 MR2 (don't have any idea what MK1 or MK2 means) that is making a "ticking" noise at certains points of acceleration. They recently found metal filings during an oil change. I have heard that it could be anything from using a higher octane gas to complete engine rebuild. Can anyone give me a better idea of what to expect financially?
Fix / Recommendation 1 submitted by chunky on 26/02/2010
If you are getting metal filings in the oil then this is bad. You should only have oil in your oil.

Toyota MR2 MK3 - Engine Overheating, Revving Funny at idle (jittering), Coolant constantly needs filling, No heat from heater!!
submitted by Matthew on 25/11/2009
Hi, I have a 2004 MR2 MK III, have had it for 5 months. over the weekend the engine started overheating after 10/15 mins of driving. I have topped up the coolant and had to do this about 3 times since! The engine overheats guaranteed after 10/15 mins of driving, the engine "jitters" when idle, particularly when driven for a few minutes and then stopping at lights. The heaters will not blow out any warm air, infact its almost like its airconditioning (which I dont have). Any help would be really appreciated. I cant see any puddles or anything so cant see where it would be leaking. I am not really that into car mechanics so any direction of where to look and what to look for would be really helpful. Cant afford to take it to a garage at the minute, but would be useful to know whats wrong! Thank you

I wouldn't drive the car without getting it sorted else you could do a lot of damage to the engine and that will cost a lot to repair.

Toyota MR2 MK2 N/A - 1991 Toyota MR2 / Car spits & sputters then engine stalls
submitted by Larry on 18/07/2009
I have a 1991 Toyota MR2, 4 Cylinder/2.2 Liter Non-Turbo, Manual Transmission. The problem originated when the check engine light came on. The symptoms I get are that the car is increasingly harder to start the first time in the morning or after setting for a period of time. Additionally, the car has begun to spit and sputter when driving and losses power then gains it then losses it again like itís starving of air or fuel. The car usually idles around 800 RPM but I noticed itís idling around 1,000 RPM and has gotten progressively worse and is now idling at 2,100 RPM and everywhere in between. Last night while it was spitting and sputtering the engine actually shut down and Iíve noticed massive heat emanating from it even though the heat gauge reads normal. The engine would not restart until it had sat for a period of time to cool off. Even after I go it restarted I can only drive it a few miles until it spits and stutters then shuts down again. I've replaced the O2 sensor, fuel filter, oil filter and have performed a tune up with new plugs, plug wires, and cap and rotor. Iíve cleaned the air intake and throttle body, as well as, replaced the throttle position sensor with no noticeable changes. The check engine light remains and the car is still running poorly. Iím out of ideas can anyone help me with this?

Toyota MR2 MK1 N/A - JUST BOUGHT 1987 MK1 NO COMPRESSION ON 2 AND 3 PISTONS (PLEASE HELP!)
submitted by Jason Sheppard on 05/07/2009
Just bought 1987 mk1 which ran fine when I bought it, when I got it home I realised it had a loss in power and kept stalling and cutting out when it had warmed up when idling. I replaced the spark plugs and all sparked fine, then did a compression test and discovered only pistons 2 and 3 were creating compression. Could this be a result of the headgasket? 1 and 4 are fine. Also the clutch was bitting very low down and in 2hours of driving the clutch has been quickly lost and even with the clutch to the floor there is nothing. Is this from the engine problem? Many thanks to all that can help.

Toyota MR2 MK2 N/A - Ignition failure / smoke on ignition
submitted by Matt on 06/02/2009
Recently bought an M-reg (1995) MR2 GT T-bar and everything has been fine until today. Upon starting the car after work (cold engine) it failed to start. I persisted and the car started after the 4th attempt - but there was smoke from the exhaust which was grey / black in appearance. I allowed the car to sit for a few minutes upon pulling off and driving home, everything seemed normal. I'll try again in the morning - but any suggestions greatly appreciated.

submitted by Jordan on 26/01/2009
I noticed about a year ago that my car lost some power and started to make noise(chattering) under load going up hill.I thought it could be an ignition prob or something more serious like a bearing or componant in the valve gear.about 6months after i noticed some knocking after starting for about 1min.the car seems to buck under exeleration and also in slow moving traffic.the latest thing thats happening is that the revs have started to drop sometimes when stopped.it sounds like its going to die completely but doesn't.any ideas please;0(

Recently, it has started to idle very rough at all temperatures and it has now started cutting out when i approach traffic lights etc. It starts again straight away and I am not losing power. I know its not the valve timing or plugs. Another (maybe unconnected) thing is that the emmissions are very high. Please help! Thanks

Toyota MR2 MK2 Turbo - Loss of Gas Mileage
submitted by Ryan on 24/01/2008
Recently in the past week or 2 I have had a great decrease in my gas mileage. Like I'm talking from 19 mpg to id say maybe 5mpg. I looked my engine over and on the upper right corner of my block where my covers mount to the block there is black soot. At idle speed when I put my hand by the soot I can feel blowing air. I talked to a few mechanics on said it could be my head gasket but the symptoms dont add up to that, one also suggested something with my Turbo and that my engine was running very rich due to the problem with the turbo.. I'm just wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction to get this fixed. Thank you

Toyota MR2 MK2 N/A - Four cylinders work then only three work
submitted by Gavin Snarey on 04/01/2008
I recently acquired a 1991 MK2 MR2 2.0 Auto which had not been cared for very well (lady owner). The car was burning oil but I have completed a full engine flush and oil change which resulted in the car running very sweet. After taking the car around the block I returned home and the car just began to run on three cylinders so I checked the plugs. A little carbon deposit but I cleaned them up and all seemed fine. When replacing the HT leads I noticed that the rubber ends had all perished and therefore suspect this has resulted in the loss of one cylinder. Please tell me that I am on the right tracks and new leads will correct the problem as this would be a great restiration project. If you have any other ideas please please let me know.

Toyota MR2 MK2 N/A - knocking from right hand side of engine bay.
submitted by Alex Forsyth on 02/10/2007
Y Reg ZZW30R. I say engine bay but cant pinpoint source. The knocking apears to be from under the rocker cover. I'v had it off and all aprears fine. The chain has about 4mm play vertical. Is this within limits? The timing was done six months ago and all is correct with starting and power. Have removed sump, the big end through to pistons are good. There was a low oil issue, although not dry the light didn't come on. Some times there is no knock at start up only when reving dose the knock apear. Other times the Knock is at start up disapears then comes back when revved. I ve done the spanner bit with nothing to report. Im now wondering if the cracked weld on the exhaust heat sheld has anything to do with it. If anyone has a suggestion I'd like to hear it.

Toyota MR2 MK1 N/A - Cooling system problem,can any one help??
submitted by Adam on 09/09/2007
Hi! I have what seems to be a serious problem with my car. It started when I noticed that from time to time the revs are hunting when I've travelled home from work (about 8 miles). Then a few days ago, it done it and then droped a load of brown water water from somewhere under the engine. I drove it to a friends to put it on a ramp to find where the water came from. could not see exactly but looks like a metal pipe which runs across the back of the block. Problem then became far worse as water is now coming from the front of the car, around the radiator and judging by the mess, it's beeing forced out. Please help, Thanks!

Toyota MR2 MK2 N/A - MR2 Random stalling
submitted by Michelle on 26/05/2007
My 1991 MR2 is not a turbo. I'll be in gear at a light or braking towards a light and it will simply die on me. It's also done it while I was accelerating. In order for me to get it to start again, I have to push the gas pedal all the way to the floor and it barely gets any gas, even with it to the floor. After a few seconds of this, it will rev up and go; sometimes though, as soon as I let up off the gas it immediately dies on me again and I'm back to pushing the gas pedal to the floor again. I've been told it's electrical, I've been told it's the head gasket. Any ideas?????

Toyota MR2 MK2 Turbo - Turbo stalling in 3rd 4th and 5th gears
submitted by Andy Symonds on 27/04/2007
I have a rev 2 turbo with de-cat, performance exhaust, apexi air filter, and, dump valve. A while ago the alternator went and was replaced. When I got the car back it refused to start. I removed the plugs and found them totally black. after a clean the car fired up, but, idled at 1250 rpm. After diagnosis codes 24 and 31 were displayed. I changed the airflow meter and ecu (had spares) and the codes vanished (obviosly due to new ecu). However I found I have a new problem, the car pulls fine in 1st and 2nd gear but when you reach 3rd, 4th and 5th the power loss and juddering/hesitation increases with each gear changed to. i.e the car judders a bit in 3rd more in 4th and badly in 5th. I did a second diagnosis and got code 35 (turbo pressure sensor fault or short) I checked with another spare sensor and same problem. decided to change the ecu back top original, and, found broken brown wire at middle plug of ecu, reconnected and found high idling had gone but still had power issues through gears. I have just done a further diagnosis and no codes are present???? No air leaks seem to be present and turbo pipes seem fine? Could it be dump valve, overboost fuel cut? Help please.

I have a 1990 mr2 mk2 t bar on start up when cold ( when sitting overnight)the engine would have rattled for a few seconds and then been ok , I got a oil pressure check carried out which showed low oil pressure, engine was removed and i got the shaft polished (which did not need ground) and new big end and main bearings fitted and a new oil pump, the engine was rebuilt and when started up the problem was still there, have tried 0/30 w grade oil which has still not helped and am using genuine toyota filters, any suggestions!

Toyota MR2 MK2 N/A - Clicking noise from right rear on acceleration
submitted by gareth fullerton on 24/11/2005
I own a 1991 Jap 2ltr 16v. When I accelerate from start in first and second gear there is a sort of clicking noise from the driver rear. Someone mentioned it might be the suspension, possibly worn bushes. Please advise. Another problem I have is that, when I turn the engine off and listen to the engine ther is a sort of crackling noise, it sounds like the noise you would hear from an overhead power cable. Someone mentioned it could be a gas leak rather than a loose electrical cable. It is coming fom the passenger side of the engine. Please advise

Toyota MR2 MK1 N/A - Engine seems limited to 4000 rpm!
submitted by Mike Burton on 30/10/2005
My 1989 mk1 t-bar will not rev above 4000 RPM, it cuts out and re-engages at about 3000 RPM and builds up slowly to 4000, then repeats. fuel consumption has gone bad, approx 80-90 miles to a tank!!!. since the problem started i have replaced the dizzy cap and rotor arm( they were shot), i have tried a new ECU, but made no difference. Anybody got any ideas as to what the problem is, please? It has a K&N air filter/induction kit, and a janspeed stainless exhaust, but otherwise no mods. plugs seem good, as do the throttle sensor, housing, coil. Mileage 116,000

Toyota MR2 MK2 N/A - Engine knocking at mid to high revs and at cold start
submitted by Nathan Ashard on 14/10/2005
I first noticed a knocking noise apparently coming from the engine a few weeks ago from about 4000 rpm and above, shortly after noticing that the oil warning light occassionally came on despite the levels being fine. I have hardly driven the car since then because I don't know what it is, but have been looking to sell it for a while and would like to know what the problem could be. The whole problem is: At cold start there are high revs with a loud knocking for about a second followed by very low idling for a while gradually going to normal idling of around 900 rpm. The engine sounds fine at idle and upto about 3500 rpm, but after that a knocking noise starts up. I have been given a few suggestions including big/small end or oil pump. Anyone got any idea????

Engine starts great from cold sits about 2000rpm but after driving for about 5-10 mins the revs drop dramatically and the engine coughs and splutters all over the place. It idles (just) at about 400rpm and has a habit of cutting out while sitting at lights and stuff. I've tried a few things that you guys suggested. Bleeding the coolant system, checking the vacuum lines etc. but nothing happening. I started playing about with the sensors and it seems to get a bit better when I "wiggle" the wires on the water temperature sensor. Would this be the kind of thing that could be linked or is it sheer coincidnce??

Toyota MR2 MK2 N/A - Intermittent engine cut-out / stalling
submitted by Ian Slack on 20/02/2005
My car is the base 2.0 liter coupe, 1990 G-reg Mk11. For the last 6 months it has suffered from the engine cutting out, albeit intermittently. Typical scenario is driving a couple of miles from cold, stopping to fill up with petrol, then when come to start the car, the engine fires ok but then dies. After trying 2 or 3 times the car will then start up and be fine for a few days, then does it again. It has also cut out on me whilst driving twice, but will instantly fire up again using the ignition. I've only neede breakdown assistance once, when the problem first started. Had all the basic stuff checked. A main Toyota dealer has had the car twice; cannot find any faults with the wiring circuitry. They did think it was the fuel relay which was replaced. Car ran fine for 2 months, then started playing up again. They now think it is the airflow meter but they aren't 100% sure about this. I'm not going to spend £500 on a brand new part. I'm looking for a salvage part at the moment and hope this will sort it. Has anyone had a similar problem or know what it might be? Don't want to spend vast amounts of money and would also be interested in selling it if anyone is interested. Apart from this problem, it is in very good condition for its age. Mileage is 139,000. Toyota MR2 MK2 Turbo - poor full throttle performance
submitted by PETE CHARLTON on 04/02/2005
91 mr2 turbo from hell. The car has many minor problems but main one is no go at high revs.Up to 1/3 throttle car is quite lively but anything more results in loads of vibration and very litle acceleration.when leaving a motorway after a few miles the car will refuse to take full throttle (although i can hear turbo spinning up and boost gague is at max) often leaving me stuck in the middle of a roundabout. The only way out is 1/4 throttle and lots of clutch slip.Changing fuel filter cured this problem but after a couple of days it was back again.Disconecting fuel pipe to check fuel pressure(which was ok)again cured problem.car was awesome fun for a cople of days before performance tailed off again. Now disconecting and re conectincg fuel line has little or no effect.I have replaced air filter, dizzy cap, rotor arm, plugs and leads, replaced cat whith de cat pipe, ecu, air flow meter and all vaccum and turbo hoses.Plugs look weak but fuel consumption is awfull(16mpg)but i still love the damn car!On the few occaisions its been 100% its awesome.Am i missing something obvious? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Toyota MR2 MK2 N/A - knocking noise from the bottom end
submitted by Dean on 25/01/2005
when driving my car the oil light came on so i pulled into my work place and got a friend to bring some oil up as i didn't want to drive it like that. once i put oil in i started the car and i heard a knocking noise from the bottom end, the AA came and towed me home. my dad started to take the sump off, when he drained the oil out we found that there was plenty of oil in there, more than i put in. the shell bearing's were slightly marked, could it be the oil pump? we also took the cam belt caseing off to find shaving's of metal around the caseing. there was no shaving's in the oil, no smoke when i lasted stared the car or loss of power have you any ideas what this could be???

Toyota MR2 MK1 N/A - My check engine light stays lit since the engine swap, what does this mean
submitted by Jose Romero on 16/01/2005
I have a 1985 toyota mk1 MR2. The car went through an engine swap due cause the previous one had blown. It went from a 4A-GE black and blue top and swapped it with a new 4A-GE redtop that belonged to FWD vehicle that was just under 30,000 miles on it. Ever since the check engine light stays lit and don't know how to diagnostic the problem. I know there's a problem somewhere cause during the installation some vacuum hoses and wires from the harness didn't go with car and I tampered with the harness for the engine to run. The engine runs great but at times when going fairly far and stop at a stop light the car starts idling at a low rpm and then eventually turns off. What can I do cause I don't have a clue.

I have a slight ticking noise coming from the engine on tickover when the cars had a good run, is this just the tappets and is this normal? If so, should a flush and new oil sort it as i have only recently bought the car? Also, what oil do people recommend? Finally, just had a new clutch fitted and the clutch bite is about half way up the pedal travel, is this normal? Was expecting it to be lower down?

Toyota MR2 MK1 N/A - I have had a graduall loss of power since purchasing the car
submitted by Jeremy Koller on 06/01/2005
I think it is my headgasket but would like to know from someone with experience. When i bought the car it ran like a champ, balls to the wall plenty of power however after about 100 mi i started loosing a good deal of power when engine reached normal oper temp. but had normal amount of power during cold start and it lasted that way for quite a while i recall one day having a major power prob (after the intial loss) due to lack of coolant luckily i had only driven about a 1/2 mi with this problem then quickly added coolant and the problem ceased though i had not gotten my full power back. that was about three months ago. more recently i have lost more power yet again. i had thought it to be the O2 sensor til two days ago when i replaced it and no results. i have also changed oil within the last 500 mi when i did though there was an extremely low amount less than a quart no creamy residue though. spark plugs are new. i have no steam coming from my exhaust though. i also have a weak idle between 500 and 600 during the summer with the AC on the car didn't have enough power to run at idle speed and i have to rev the car up when accelerating from first to about 2000 rpms i can't not get the car moving from a stop with just the clutch.

Toyota MR2 MK2 N/A - Exhaust Smokes at 4-5K Revs
submitted by Scottie on 30/12/2004

Got him to drive off in the car while I watched, about the 4,000 to 5,000 Revs smoke started coming out of the exhaust, the smoke I saw was grey, and the smoke my mate saw the first time was grey with a tint of blue (note this is a non turbo). I just had a new clutch plate put in about 4 months before this happend. I can push in the clutch and it does what its supposed to {the clutch anyway} but no matter what it still stays in 2nd when i let off of it. Toyota MR2 MK1 SuperCharged - mk1 supercharger: HELP! pulley/belt problem
submitted by Jon Glover on 10/10/2004
Hi all My aircon pump has seized and snapped the belt that runs the waterpump and supercharger. Problem is the aircon will be too expensive to replace (I dont use it anyway, currently no gas). Between my garage and I, we've decided to try find a smaller belt that will run the waterpump and supercharger but bypass the aircon. Has anyone done this or know if there is a belt from another vehicle that will do it? Its a 5 v groove belt but will be smaller. Did the 4a-gze or mr2 supercharger ever come with no aircon? I've had trouble identifing which pulley on the engine is which (seven in total including alternator, crank etc). Does have any diagrams (such as in a Haynes manual) that explains them? The one that has seized appears to be on the side or just below the supercharger but garage seem confident this is the aircon pulley. The car has an HKS pulley, I believe this is fitted on the crank or the supercharger? Any help is much appreciated. jon.glover@totalise.co.uk Thanks

Toyota MR2 MK1 N/A - Has my headgasket gone?
submitted by RICHARD ATKINS on 08/07/2004
Going along M25, doing steady 80mph, Orange warning light comes on, temp gauge goes off scale. No lack of power,(no cut out either, I've had that before when overheating through no water in system) though funny ticking/knocking coming from under my feet(driver), to the left (RHD car). Pulled over, checked radiator, empty. Filled it up, waited in idle until temp gauge back to normal, then set off. 3 miles further on, same thing. Filled up again, but this time noticed all the water pouring out from just under the pedals (sort of front right, parallel with back of front wheel). Thinking it was a burst hose, called out RAC for tow home. RAC man arrived, filled it up with water and no leak. He put the rad cap back on and out poured the water from the same place. His diagnosis was that, due to a pressure build up, it was coming out of the hose that was retained with a spring clip, because it was the point of 'least resistance'? I thought that was what the rad cap or overflow did? the place of least resistance. Anyway, he therefore concluded that it was the head-gasket. Would he be correct? Anybody else experienced similar? Please help as I don't really want to have to replace the head-gasket. If I do, how hard or easy is it? Do I need any special tools?

The guy thats fitting it has told me that he thinks theres a part missing! (not very reassuring) He said on the left side of the engine wall he has a couple of leads that dont plug into anything. One looking like a computer socket? Now i dont know much about engines but...its obviously not the ECU because it runs...the problem is its emmissions are at 9%! when they should be at 4%. My brother who is a bike mechanic said it could be the MAP sensor? I didnt know if anyone could offer any help...im baffled and wanna get my baby on the road! Thanks in advance

Toyota MR2 MK1 N/A - MR2 MK1 wont idle
submitted by Kenetik on 04/05/2004
I bought a 1986 mr2 mk1. The car did not run when i purchased it. It would turn over, start but stop immediately. I sealed the tubing from the throttle body to the Air flow sensor. It ran great. Now I am having the same problem (although i am positive I fixed the leak). I replaced the vacuum hoses, but i think some are not in there right places. Would this prevent the engine from running? I also took the throttle body off and cleaned it and replaced the gasket. I can get the car to run if i play with the gas pedal when starting, when it gets warm it will run. Any Ideas?

Toyota MR2 MK1 SuperCharged - Engine check light warning
submitted by Jon on 28/04/2004
Hi all On many of my journeys I get the yellow 'check engine' warning light appear. I've followed the process as described on this site: http://www.challoner.com/mr2/tech/diagnostics.html I got 2 flashes which means 'Pressure sensor signal' Problem: Open or short circuit in pressure sensor. Fault area is either Pressure sensor circuit, Pressure sensor or in ECU. This diagnostic test worked so I assume this error code sequence applies to the supercharger I have. My question is A) What the hell is the pressure sensor? B) Has anyone had this and fixed it? If anyone can help my email is jon.glover@roadpilot.com Thanks Jon

Toyota MR2 MK2 N/A - 3S-GE Compression Test - What pressure should it be?
submitted by James on 26/04/2004
I've done a compression test on my '90 MR2 N/A GTi 3S-GE engine and have found that the pressure is between 204 and 208 psi on all the cylinders! I have had to change my head gasket anyway, and so expected to find lots of carbon on the cylinders but there was only a millimetre at most and everything seems to be in good order seeing as the cars done 146k. I can't find what the pressure should be on this model engine, but on the 4S-FE and 3S-GTE the manuals quote 178psi and 164psi respectively (I think off memory!). This makes my MR2 seem extremely high and I'm worried that if I put it back together again, I'm going to still have the same problem again. Can anyone put my mind at rest or give me another possible cause of this problem? Thanks.

Toyota MR2 MK2 Turbo - 91 turbo boost problems
submitted by ricks on 08/04/2004
Mods:SUS Blitz Air filter,FCD at16PSI,No cats,TurboXSVOB,AluminumFlyweel and CrankPulley, Nology Wires & Stock CT26,DSBC Blitz BC(including VSV disable) & Spearco IC w/ 2.5" pipes. After installed all the mods I obtained full 15psi boost for a couple of days, then suddenly my turbine or whatever rattles at about 7-8psi sometimes at 10-12psi and can't boost any further. Is this a MAF related problem?, I checked my DSBC and it is ok. I know the turbo is leaking oil but very little. Is my turbo rattling at high boost? other than that the engine runs fine under low boost conditions. Any information would be appreciated.

Toyota MR2 MK2 Turbo - Starter problem please help me...
submitted by Vin Diesel on 11/03/2004
Hey I have a 94 mr2 turbo and I have a problem with my starte. After trying to figure it out by myself and with the help of my mechanic I don't knwo what else should I do.. It happens especially when my car is cold. Everytime I try to turn on my car in the morning, the starter get stuck in the flyweel. It means that I can hear it spinning while the engine is running. Because it is bad for the flyweel I just turn off my car and start it again. It would do that like at least 10 times before my car starts normally. It does a very annoying noise. Like a drill or something. I first thought that it was the starter that was going bad so I got a rebuilt one and installed it. No success. After that my mechanic did a diagnostic and told me it was the ignition switch. So I changed it and it still does that motherfucking thing. I don t know what to do now. I have a new starter and a new ignition switch and wireharness. It pisses me off because my car runs perfect and is very clean except that annoying thing. Everytime I start my car and I have people around me it is very embarassing LOL you feel me bro. Now it happens more and more often even during the day. So please does anyone have a clue of what s going on with that starter that doesn t wanna come back????? Thanks a lot for reading and sorry for my english but I speak French Peace out

It seems to be fine but once it heats up the normal growl has a sort of high pitched whining/whirring noise through it. other symptoms include - white smoke, more like condensation that i seem to get when starting from cold. this seems to die away after a few mins driving. Occasionally I get it too when accelerating hard. It smells as though the mixture isn't quite right when you stand behind it. Also the temp gauge has stopped working too, it was fine to begin with but then started to dance around between cold and normal for a day then died completely. second, the rear passenger brake seems to stick when it freezes up at night. it then losens off after a few mins driving too. any help for these problems would be much appreciated........

Toyota MR2 MK2 Turbo - Can't stop Overboosting Problem
submitted by Raymond on 29/12/2003
I have a 91 mr2 Turbo and I have tried over and over to stop it from overboosting. I took off the stock intercooler and I'm just running straight pipe with bov from turbo to throttlebody. I have a greddy manual boost controller and a Autometer boost gauge. The boost gauge would say I was boosting at like 8 lbs in first then 12 in second, and then it would hit the fuel cut in third (presumably well over 14 lbs). I changed the turbo actuator to a 5-8lbs actuator and it still does the same thing. Everything else is working fine no other engine codes it just wont stop overboosting.I have had the car for about 9 months and have been dealing with this problem for sometime. Thanks for any help.

I have an '86 mk1 mr2. When the engine is cold, runs normally, but after it has had time to warm up, when idling if clutch is pushed in, rpms drop about 400 causing engine to stall. I have noticed that alot of people have this problem but everyone that answers them hAS A differant solution and the people still have their problem. so here goes the one that gets this right should be hailed as the MISTER King.. I have a 1988 mr2 mk1 16v 4age N/A and it runs great and pulls hard through total rpm range never overheats with good oil pressure it has A/C but the compressor recently froze so its not working.. on cold idle it is right about 1500 rpm but when hot most of the time ildes around 850 rpm when it gets hot (good operating temp) the idle bounces car stumbles then comes backand runs fine.. doesnt always happen and almost never dies.. also you should know that i have no cooling leaks outside or inside of the motor the coolant level is right and i havent opened the system so no air could have gotten in .. any help from the king of the MISTERS will be praised with the highest regaurd.. Toyota MR2 MK2 Turbo - Full boost then cuts power
submitted by Darren on 19/11/2003
Occasionally I like to give the car a bit of a workout. But twice over this last year, I have pushed the car to full boost, then the car will suddenly lose power and the orange/yellow alternator light (I presume this is meant to be the turbo light) appears on the dashboard. I can still accelerate but if I go past 3,000 rpm's (where the turbo kicks in) the rev's die again. There doesn't appear to be any smoke or unfamiliar noises from the engine. And if I leave the car for a few hours all seems to be well again. It first happened to me abour eight months ago and once again recently with no problems in between. I wondered if this something to do with the turbo getting to hot and having a safety cut. It has a Blitz dump valve and Super power flow induction kit. Just replaced the rusted, holey Japanese exhaust with a mongoose so maybe that was the problem with lack of back-pressure. Car seems to accelerate much smoother now than when I had the old exhaust (really jumped when the turbo kicked in). Apologies for the long explaination, only had the car for a year now so I guess it's best to explain as much as poss. Any suggestions?

Toyota MR2 MK2 N/A - Vacuum hose
submitted by Marky Mark on 28/07/2003
I have a 91 MKII NA 3GSE. When I acquired the car I gave it a complete service only to find a niggling problem! On the alloy section of the fuel inlet manifold to the rear of the engine bay, there is a rod that protrudes on the air filter side which connects to an armiture and then onto a vacuum diaphram. The hose to the diaphram is missing? The car runs fine, but I can't help thinking there should be something there? Can anyone tell me what it is and tell me where the hose should be connected to?

Toyota MR2 MK2 N/A - MR2 MkII running really rough
submitted by Kevin Booth on 18/07/2003
Hi, I've recently bought a 1991 J standard MR2 (no spoiler), and its started to run very roughly. It feels almost like one of the spark plugs is out (which they arent) - ie lack of response, its hunting to the point where it lurches ahead constantly and wont drive smoothly until you get up to about 65mph. I recently changed the radiator due to a leak, and after bleeding the system noticed it had improved the situation a bit, but for only a few hours, then became rough again. A garage thought it might be an air leak, but wouldn't spend time investigating. Does anyone have any ideas? Could it be air getting into the system perhaps? If so, whats the most likely cause? Would a diagnostic check from Toyota pin point this - or would I be chucking money away!! Thanks everyone.

Toyota MR2 MK1 SuperCharged - Supercharger boost slow to engage
submitted by Dean Kennedy on 29/06/2003
After pressing the accelerator from off boost, the boost engages slowly. For about 2 seconds, the boost stutters from 1-2 psi, then picks up. Boost does reach normal levels once it does pick up. I suspect something related to the clutch because if I am on boost, lift, and accelerate again, the boost responds quickly. Does not seem like the belt, because that seems to cause lowered boost. I did check the resistance of the clutch stator as the BGB recommends, and that checked out perfect at 3.7 ohmm. The system has an HKS pulley and the standard vacuum hose bypass, but has been that way for years. This problem started recently. Has anybody seen anything like this? Thanks Dean

Toyota MR2 MK1 N/A - Acceleration Problem
submitted by Tandy R. Yates on 03/08/2002
My problem stars when I am idling in my vehicle (92 MR2, no turbo), when the A/C is on the vehicle loses RPM significantly. I also have the problem that when I do push down on the gas pedal, my accelaration is Bogged down and my engine makes a low deep noise (like not getting full power to engine) and then all of the sudden power will be restored and accelaration will increase (not to the full potential as before this problem started). It happens in every gear (less frequent in the higher gears) and every time I drive it. Please Advise on what could cause this problem? Thank you

Toyota MR2 MK2 N/A - MR2 doesn't like rain? engine failure?
submitted by Bill Wyman on 20/07/2002
I have a 91 MR2 N/A which has been giving me problems in the rain lately. It seems that when it is raining realy hard, it stalls, and will not start until it dries up. I am thinking electrical problem, but when it stalls, all of the electronics in the car still work. When it does stall, I try to restart the engine, and it just cranks, but won't turn over. Spark plugs and wires and rotor all replaced. Can't diagnose... any ideas?

Toyota MR2 MK2 Turbo - Cambelt fouling water pump.
submitted by Phil on 08/05/2002
The above came to light during a cambelt change, even with a washer bodged behind the cam belt tensioner. When bodge was removed the situ was worse. Can any one tell me what collection of wrong parts can cause this? Add info: The tensioner is a plunger type, on a 1990 MR2? Was this type available then? Or do I have a different engine in? Any help much appreciated. Phil
