Toyota MR2 MK2 Turbo - Missing underboost
submitted by kriss2888 on 26/12/2012
Hi all I hope some one can help me out as this problem is doing my head in I have a rev2 turbo that missfires (or sounds like it is) under boost, the car it's self doesn't want to know from cold it idles fine as soon as you set off and try giving it a little it coughs and bogs down, then it will run ok after started to warm up but as norm don't go over half/3/4 boost as should as soon as it will let you it starts missing then gives you full boost back off the throttle and put foot down again and it does the same again? I know that the thermostat has gone and is not letting the car warm up properly but surely it shouldn't be doing what it is from cold can anybody help with this one as its really doing my head in now cheers

Toyota MR2 MK2 N/A - Please help me!!!!!! Engine stalling really frequently in 1st/2nd gear
submitted by Jo Martin on 26/09/2010
Hi, I have a MK 2 MR2 T bar(S reg, anniversary edition) which I have just spend tons on getting a new clutch, aerial, roof seals etc (I'd reach the 'sell it' or 'keep it 'til it dies' point and decided I just couldn't bear to part with it). This remaining problem is making me wish I'd sold!! I thought it might be related to the clutch but I was wrong. Gutted. :-( The is intermittent which makes me think it's electrical, but it seems to be getting steadily worse. Symptoms: - I'm sure the battery used to charge to full, with the needle sitting hard up at the top of the gauge. Now it is always about 4/5 charged and dips visibly if I use an electric window. Bought new battery. No difference. - If it stalls, which it does alot, it labours to start again (3-4 seconds of prevaricating after I turn the key?). If it doesn't start first time in the morning, the second attempt can be dodgy too. It seems to be worstening with the bad weather. - The battery seems to go flat quite easily. This isn't a major symptom as I never ever intentionally sit with the engine off and the radio/fans/lights on any more, but if I do by accident, it goes flat really fast. - The engine has a really wobbly idle. At around 1000/2000rpm it sometimes jumps around alot. Earlier today, just driving in second gear at 15mph, in a queue, foot on accelerator, the whole car bunny-hopped, jolting violently every couple of seconds. It's done this before when if it's having a bad day. - When I am driving in first or second gear, I can actually feel the engine threatening to stall. I can tell if I'm going to have a bad day within a minute of having the engine on. It feels a bit 'weak' under my feet. Wobbly? Unstable? Subtle but I am used to it so notice it very fast now. Particularly if changing down through the gears. Worst is if I am approaching a junction or joining a queue of traffic and changing down. If I am slowing the car down and go near the clutch in a low gear to bring the car in to a halt, that's gonna stall on me. I end up revving the car in frustration. Each junction can be a test. I am more and more using engine breaking and trying to keep the revs high. I am actually getting scared of driving the car and starting to question my driving ability it stall so often. It's destroying my confidence and I am normally a very confident, assertive driver. - It can be particularly bad if I've been doing 65mph on the motorway and then come off a sliproad and have to stop at a roundabout. I never drive faster than 65mph to try not to exacerbate this. - I am constantly battling with it not to stall. A 20 minute drive to work can include re-starting the car 6 or 7 times. How completely embarrassing. - Toyota diagnostic test showed a big fat zero. PLEASE if anyone knows what this could be, could they give me some advice? I am so miserable about it. I love my car and know it's getting rarer as a limted edition but 'we buy any car. com' is starting to beckon. Many thanks for any suggestions you have.

Toyota MR2 MK1 SuperCharged - wont start
submitted by timothy bane on 19/02/2010
hi i am in america, i have a 1985 toyota mr2 n/a that i did an engine swap on to 4agze s/c. he said it wouldnt fit in the engine bay so he took it off, tried to screw me over for a friend to buy. i got it fixed, the it ran like crap, and the clutch master kept leaking, took it to a guy to fix the gas. he said he fixed it and drove it, but one day it wouldn't start, said it was something mechanical, i took it to another guy, he diagnosed it and said it was the ecu, so i got the same ecu that came with the car not the engine, and it will not fire, but will try to crank. What is wrong with my car?

Toyota MR2 MK2 N/A - Car cutting out coughing and spluttering
submitted by David Mason on 24/10/2007
I need help quickly!! I have a 1993 mr2 gts and having some worrying problems. On cold mornings having bother getting it started, changed the temp sensor but still the same but always get it up and running eventually. When in any gear on the road with revs between 1000 - 2000rpm it coughs and splutters seems like no power is getting through even with the foot planted it struggles. Once up past 2200 rpm seems to be okay. On wet days the problem seems to be worse, i have an air filter on it would it help if i put original air box back on? Also the car seems to be running rich, very heavy on the fuel and dont think i'm getting maximum power all the time? Also on start up in morning once its ticking over if i give it a little throttle say 2500rpm then lift of, suddenly the revs die and it either cuts out or almost cuts out. Can anyone help?

Toyota MR2 MK1 N/A - Sounds like a prop shaft noise but I know I dont have one !
submitted by greg weeks on 06/03/2007
when driving there is a low but audioable noise like a bump bump bump which speeds up and slows down with the speed of the car, as siad its not very loud and the faster you go the engine drowns it out. Have run down a hill with the car out of gear and engine off, still get it so think its drive shafts ? wheels seem solid no play so not bearing.. for us older people the noise is a bit like when you used to attach a cigarette card to your bike wheel with a clothes peg ! have heard very similar noises before on another car but this was from the prop shaft! Any ideas ?

Toyota MR2 MK1 N/A - Knocking coming from rear-left wheel...
submitted by John on 06/10/2005
I have an '86 NA MR2 and, recently, the left rear wheel developed a knocking. At first it was pretty faint, but has grown to be pretty loud. The knocking steadily increases along with the speed. I have taken the wheel off and examined the tire - it looks fine. I looked at the brake rotor - it doesn't look bad. I looked at the CV boots, and they look fine. I figured that if it was a CV joint problem, the boot would be the first thing to go...correct me if I'm wrong. I was thinking it might be a bearing because it recently started having a little metal on metal griding noise every now and then, but I don't see why the bearing would have the steady knocking. Has any one else experienced anything like this before? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I've just bought an MR2 sports (the one without the rear wing) And its run fine for 200miles. I left it standing for two days, and when I came to start it made a Loud Whine from the right hand side of the engine. It sounds as if its coming from the Alternator area but I can see its spinning. The sound dies down after and short distance of driving it. To describe it, it sounds like somethings slipping but i can't see anything wrong. Also there is a mild smell of burning (rubber??) Toyota MR2 MK1 N/A - Rear wheel seems like its wants to fold under?
submitted by Jim Steele on 02/08/2005
When driving on curvy roads my 86 MR2 seems to me like the wheel, mostly on the right rear, feels like it is about ready to "fold under" the car. In a corner it enters fine but all of a sudden it has the above feeling and quickly "oversteers itself". The other issue is sometimes whither this feeling is there or not it acts like the clutch slips and the car "shudders". Ant help would be appreciated. Thanks!
