| Plumbing | | Toyota MR2 MK1 N/A - Overheating and coolant leak | | A lot of people seem to have had similar problems with this car. It's a 1988 Mk1 NA, it's had 12 owners, done 140k and it was pretty cheap. So we're probably off on a bad foot anyway. I have no mechanical knowledge and no way of getting under the car saving using the jack that came with it. I'm pretty reliant on my garage. I'm also pretty broke.
I started losing a bit of coolant from the front of the car (seemed to be on the right side of the radiator), but the temp gauge was normal, I only saw the leak when I got home. This went on for two days. The idle also started bouncing. This would come and go. I kept checking the expansion tank and saw no drop in the level. On the third day when I got home I could hear bubbling from behind me. On opening the engine cover and expansion tank cap I saw the coolant boiling and bubbling and squirting out of the overflow. It was a steamy experience.
That night I read pretty much every post on here that sounded like my problem. I boiled it down to two things:
* System needs bleeding
* Or it's the head gasket
So I got the car down to my local garage (it sounded rough as a dog on the way, idle bouncing like crazy too). I asked the mechanic to check out the head gasket and see if the coolant system needed bleeded. He rung me up later that day and told me that there had been air in the system, and that my radiator cap had been very weak and that that may have been the problem. He looked for leaks in the head gasket and only found a tiny gap. He'd flushed the system, installed a new rad cap and checked the gasket; I was happy, came and got the car, took it for a gentle drive. Next day, all was well - I took it for a longer, slightly harder drive - again, all ok.
Next day, took it to the shops (about 3 miles down a fast road). About 2/3rds of the way there, doing about 80mph, I glanced at the temp gauge and saw it was off the scale! Immediately backed off, coasted down the hill. By the time I'd reached the bottom, the gauge was just under half (which is where it usually is). On the way home it did the same thing, only this time it wouldn't come back down to normal. I didn't stop, since I was so close to home, just coasted when I could.
Got home, opened it up, found the expansion overflow pissing steam again, and now a biggish coolant leak from the front of the car, seems to be a different place now: left-hand side, near the wheel. Looks like it's coming from some piping but I can't tell.
I need to know what needs doing to sort this problem out. So far I'm thinking to ask the garage to check all the piping and valves on the coolant system, and the thermostat.
Any advice or suggestions would be great, so thanks in advance :)
(apologies if I've posted this twice - not sure what happened first time, might have got the code wrong) |
| Plumbing | | Toyota MR2 MK1 N/A - Loss of water | | I recently bought a mk1 mr2. I have just checked my expansion tank for the coolant and found it has dropped considerably. I have had a garage look at it which assures me its not the head gasket.
In peoples’ opinion is it difficult to assess and find a leak on a mr2? Are there any common points and areas in which I should look for? Thanks
