I just gaot my MR2 MK2 a couple of days ago when i went to it this morning it wouldn't start. I had the usaul warnings on the dash and these were dimming and the stereo wouldn't turn on. Straight away i assumed this was the battery. As i went to jump start it, the smaller cable coming in along with the negative cable started smoking and burning! I immediately removed the jump cables and this stopped. Upon further investigation i realised that this smaller cable was completely burnt out, then i noticed that the battery was connected the wrong way round +ve cable to the -ve terminal on the battery! After this the car went completely dead no lights or anything! I spoke to an auto electrician and he said that if the battery was connected the wrong way round this could have affected the diodes on the alternator. Does anybody know anything about this. I'm really gutted as i've hardly driven the car! Thanks a lot for any help or info received. - Fix/Recommendation Fix / Recommendation submitted by K - on 25/04/2007 Had a similar problem. battery was constantly going dead if i didnt drive it for a few days. my alternator decided to die on me whilst i was driving one day. battery cable burned through from too much current. mine was fixed by getting the alternator reconditioned and attching new battery cables. dont know if this helps at all.
