| Battery | | Toyota MR2 MK1 N/A - Battery draining | | Hi there,
When I went to look at my car, everything seemed fine, it had just had a brand new battery fitted in, however, when you rested your foot on the accelerator the alternator light came on and so did a light which had a picture of an engine with a fan infront. When you pushed the accelerator slightly more they turned off again. The car had no problem starting so I promptly bought it. When it was driving back I noticed the drivers side headlight was dim, but thought it could just be a bulb.
Went to start the car up the next day and the car had no power at all, checked the battery and it was giving 4 vaults or so, put another battery in, the car started and the battery was giving 12v when the car was running it was giving 14v, thinking that prooved it was charging. I figured it was a bad battery so I got it swapped and put the new one in. That night I noticed the dirvers side headlamp was flickering slightly, but I hoped it would go away (bad thing to do), last night the drivers side headlamp was so dim it looked like it wasn't on at all, and I checked it after I parked up, it was totally off. Went to start my car this morning and the car has no power, something is draining the battery, but I have NO idea where to even begin looking. Any ideas guys? - Fix/Recommendation |
| Fix / Recommendation submitted by rob - stungbythebug@yahoo.com on 21/04/2004 | | It sounds like there is possably a short some where by that dim light. when you installed the battery did you get a spark? If the car has any current draw you will get a spark when connecting the battery terminals. This will indacate something is draining the battery while the car is off. Next thing act as you were checking the charging system except this time turn your lights on while its running and see if you still get 12-14v. I would also check the fuse blocks very well because there are several fuses in the lighting system designed to stop just this thing. word of warning though several of the larger fuses are actualy bolted in from the bottom and do not pull out. On another note the light with the engine is the ECU fault light. the ECU monitors and controls much of the car and if it detects something wrong it will turn the light on and store a code in memory. if you need any more help feel free to E-mail me

| Fix / Recommendation submitted by Paul - on 16/05/2004 | | Had a very similar problem. left car for a week at a car park. when i returned car was dead.
The AA put a clamp meter on the battery - pulling 8 amps with keys out. He wacked the alternator and it stopped pulling the current. Disconnected battery over the next few days everytime i stopped just in case.
Week later started car and alternator light came on.
Revved the car up and it cleared. after 50 miles light came on and stereo started playing up.Stopped car and could not start it again. Voltage down. . My alternator was also charging but after a long journey it must be short circuiting.
Replaced alternator now ok. |
